Green-glazed, brown-glazed, and three-color wares were produced and used for burial goods in the periods of the Han, the Northern dynasties, and the Tang. Basically such lead-glazed ware was color-glazed pottery emphasizing the coloring, and they were ornamental ceramics that developed with the prevalence of elaborated burial manners. In Japan, Tang three-color ware became popular in the latter half of the seventh century, and they were identified from fifty sites of the Nara period.\nThe custom of burying Tang three-color ware with a body for entombment rituals ceased around the middle of the eighth century and went through a qualitative conversion in the context of the ceramics trade with Islamic Culture. In other words, it was to bring forth the lead-glazed pottery for practical use. While white porcelain and celadon were exported, green-glazed white porcelain and three-color ceramics were produced and exported under the influence of the West Asian tastes. Though we should admit that there was technical transmission from Tang three-color ware to lead-glazed pottery of the ninth century, they were utterly different in terms of quality.
