Unlike costume, style or other constituents of the folk performing arts, narratives of origins reflect the narrators' desires and intentions concerning what the beginnings of the tradition should be. However, most folk performing arts are of obscure origin. It is unclear exactly when, how, by whom and for what purpose these traditions were started. Thus various narratives of the origin develop. But the narratives are not produced entirely by free imagination; the creation of an origin tale, relating when, by whom and for what purpose the performance was started, is closely connected to how the narrator desires to view the folk performing art. Among the narratives of Omonde origins, there are two main types: one advocates a “southern” origin; the other denies the “southern” origin entirely or in part, or completely neglects it and insist on a furyu origin. This paper examines the creative process of the “southern” origin narratives, which comprise the major portion of the genre. Borrowings between texts are also considered. The contrasting narratives of furyu origin are also studied, and the relation between narrators and both types of narratives is clarified.\nMoreover, based on the consideration of these origin stories, it is clear that a certain amount of “hermeneutical suspicion” is necessary when dealing with materials recently collected through interviews. The persons whom we call “informants” are not simply “the successors of the tradition from the previous generation.” Their own narratives come from stories heard from “various people” in the form of texts and oral communications.\nIn this way, the stories we now hear in the “field” are entangled. In the future we can expect that this actuality will continue and perhaps become even more complex. New narratives will be created in the continuing negotiations between texts and texts, between texts and oral communications, and between the oral communications among people.
