The first embedded Jori-style rice paddies have been confirmed at one of these sites, the Kōshoku Jori Sites. However, it later became clear that artifacts of embedded Jori-style rice paddies of the same period and the remains of ancient rice paddies were also found at the Ishikawa Jori Sites and Kawata Jori Sites. All of these are sites in the lowlands behind the banks of the Chikuma River. In recent years new discoveries about these sites have been made as these areas were excavated and surveyed on a large-scale as a result of expressway and bullet train construction projects. In this paper the author introduces the aspects of ancient rice paddies in the southern Zenkoji Plain, focussing on results from these excavation surveys. The following issues are some of those that have been the focus of survey results of recent years. Jori system rice paddy sites that were buried in sand from flooding in the late ninth century were studied extensively. The use of half-size divisions in a wide area becomes known. A group of even older ancient rice paddy sites was also confirmed. It is also surmised that the embedded Jori system rice paddies from the late ninth century were established from the end of the eighth century to the first half of the ninth century and it has become known that there is a possibility that rice paddies that were not part of the division system also existed in an undefined period. This has produced the slight problem of whether the appearance of the Jori system rice paddies occurred in a single step or in stages. The answer to this is inconclusive and it is difficult to raise it as a clear issue, but the author attempts to touch on the subject.}, pages = {53--68}, title = {善光寺平南部の条里遺構}, volume = {96}, year = {2002}, yomi = {イチカワ, タカユキ} }
