In order to elucidate the mechanisms involved in the domestication of plants and animals in East Asia, I believe it is first necessary to clarify, as a system, exactly how permanent settlements began and how the wilderness surrounding the settlements was used. This paper attempts to shed light on important aspects of the mechanisms of domestication, based on the relationship between humans and plants and animals that continues through the present in the areas surrounding slash-and-burn fields by the Li tribe on Hainan Island.\nThe first aspect I would like to focus upon is the importance of the space involved, i.e., the area surrounding slash-and-burn fields. Up to now, interest in slash-and-burn agriculture itself has been centered around the domestication of plants. However, I believe that as we look at the domestication of plants, we should pay attention to the relationship between the humans and the plants and animals in the border zone, what we had better consider the gray zone surrounding slash-and-burn fields, which lies between wild and cultivated areas.\nThe second aspect I consider is the possibility of three levels of wild plant use in the border zone surrounding the slash-and-burn fields: 1) plants that are not only permitted to grow within the slash-and-burn area but which are also actively replanted from the surrounding areas and used for food; 2) plants that are permitted to grow within the slash-and-burn fields to some extent but which are basically removed and used for food; and 3) plants that are strictly prohibited from growing within the slash-and-burn fields and which are permitted to grow only on the periphery and used for food. I believe that these differences in the way human beings use wild plants may point to one of processes involved in the cultivation of wild plants.\nThe third aspect I examine is the idea that useful plants planted by human beings return to a semi-wild state in the area surrounding the slash-and-burn fields, which may also serve to preserve the species. Because it is the nature of slash-and-burn agriculture to be done in continually changing locations, wilderness areas are always being created, which inevitably generates a border zone between the slash-and-burn fields and the wilderness. As a result, the area surrounding the slash-and-burn fields serves as a gateway that connects the cultivated to the wild areas, and this gateway opens both ways. Moreover, I conjecture that from a cultural perspective as well, there has been a mechanism in the border zone for generating the interaction between humans and nature, the diversity of life, and the diversity of choice. It is very likely that the essentially illiterate the Li tribe depended upon some vague grasp of this mechanism.\nHuman beings have cultivated a great variety of wild plants. The space surrounding slash-and-burn fields is important for a historical understanding of the mechanism of domestication. It also probably became a place for various plants to be cultivated even after agriculture began. I therefore suggest that cultivation became possible only when a cultural device that could foster the interaction between human beings and plants, the diversity of life, and the diversity of selection was present.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_10002_heading_23":{"attribute_name":"見出し","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_heading_banner_headline":"[共同研究] アジア地域における環境とその民族的プラクシス","subitem_heading_language":"ja"},{"subitem_heading_banner_headline":"[Collaborative Research] Environment and Indigenous Praxis in Asian Regions","subitem_heading_language":"en"}]},"item_10002_identifier_registration":{"attribute_name":"ID登録","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.15024/00001115","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_10002_publisher_8":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"国立歴史民俗博物館","subitem_publisher_language":"ja"}]},"item_10002_relation_17":{"attribute_name":"関連サイト","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_relation_name":[{"subitem_relation_name_text":"第105集 収録論文 タイトルリスト"}],"subitem_relation_type_id":{"subitem_relation_type_id_text":"https://www.rekihaku.ac.jp/outline/publication/ronbun/ronbun5/index.html#no105","subitem_relation_type_select":"URI"}}]},"item_10002_source_id_11":{"attribute_name":"書誌レコードID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AN00377607","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_10002_source_id_9":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"0286-7400","subitem_source_identifier_type":"PISSN"}]},"item_10002_version_type_20":{"attribute_name":"著者版フラグ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_version_resource":"http://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85","subitem_version_type":"VoR"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"西谷, 大","creatorNameLang":"ja"},{"creatorName":"ニシタニ, マサル","creatorNameLang":"ja-Kana"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Nishitani, Masaru","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2016-04-01"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"kenkyuhokoku_105_03.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"7.7 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"kenkyuhokoku_105_03.pdf","url":"https://rekihaku.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/1132/files/kenkyuhokoku_105_03.pdf"},"version_id":"70d10ad4-2dd1-45a1-afc8-1eb175532e6b"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"野生と栽培を結ぶ開かれた扉 : 焼畑周辺をめぐる植物利用からみた栽培化に関する一考察(環境と生活)","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"野生と栽培を結ぶ開かれた扉 : 焼畑周辺をめぐる植物利用からみた栽培化に関する一考察(環境と生活)","subitem_title_language":"ja"},{"subitem_title":"The Gateway to Connect the Wild with the Cultivated : A Study of Cultivation from the Standpoint of Plant Use on the Periphery of Slash-and-Burn Areas (Environment and Life)","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"10002","owner":"3","path":["131"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2016-04-01"},"publish_date":"2016-04-01","publish_status":"0","recid":"1132","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["野生と栽培を結ぶ開かれた扉 : 焼畑周辺をめぐる植物利用からみた栽培化に関する一考察(環境と生活)"],"weko_creator_id":"3","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-08-18T02:09:19.104717+00:00"}
