The merchandise in these early shops consisted of everyday items such as food and shoes, and specialised products were not in evidence.\nIn the medieval period, the shop became a specialised type, with a built-in counter. In the early 14th century, shops are depicted in cities all over the country, but no shopping districts, with shops lined up in rows are shown anywhere.\nThe first shopping district appeared in Kyoto in the 16th century. The earliest example we can identify is shown in the Rekihaku-kohon, a screen painting in the genre known as “Rakuchu-Rakugaizu Byobu”, owned by the National Museum of Japanese History. Almost all the shops in the Rekihaku-Kohon sold specialised merchandise and had large counters for displaying goods, which appear to have been removable.\nIn the medieval period ,markets came to be held in the street. We can see the influence of the medieval markets in the shops and display counters of the Rekihaku-kohon. But the shop buildings in Rekihaku-kohon were not market stalls made permanent. Most of the display counters shown in the buildings in Rekihaku-kohon were in effect advertisements set up in the street by the merchants to attract customers.\nIn 17th century, the place for displaying goods moved from a counter projecting into the street to the front room of the “Machiya”. In this way, the room known as “Mise”,or “Misenoma”, characteristic of early modern townhouses (“Machiya”) made its appearance. At the same time the meaning of the words “Mise” and “Tana” changed. They ceased to refer to counters for the display of goods and came to refer to the shop building itself.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_10002_description_6":{"attribute_name":"内容記述","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"一部非公開情報あり","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_10002_heading_23":{"attribute_name":"見出し","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_heading_banner_headline":"古代・中世における流通・消費とその場/[共同研究] 日本における都市生活史の研究 A班第二期","subitem_heading_language":"ja"},{"subitem_heading_banner_headline":"Distribution, Consumption and the Places in Ancient and Medieval Times / [Collaborative Research] Studies in the Urban History in Japan.
