Similarly, because of the progress in communication technology and the development of its infrastructure, it has become possible to exchange large volumes of information-including images-worldwide.\nAgainst a background of this kind of growth, research using information technology is progressing in many fields of historical and cultural studies. Furthermore, even in the field of information studies, multi-faceted research into the application of information technology to historical and cultural studies is being carried out as research into its uses in museums.\nThis paper describes certain possibilities and directions for applying image processing technology to research fields in history and culture. An extremely high definition digital image of a historical material like a scroll painting realizes seamless and detailed observation.
