On the one hand, this attention comes from the perspective of how to overcome the obstacles that prevent positive progress in the search for peace and partnership in Asia. On the other hand, it is due to the relationships they have with Japan's contribution to an international security framework, the issues of dispatching peacekeeping forces and amending the Japanese constitution and their juxtaposition with the values of the Japanese people regarding war and peace that have been formed through their experiences during and after the war. In the past, the contents of Japanese junior and senior high school textbooks were the focus of attention when it came to views of the Japanese people on peace and war. However, this scope was gradually widened to include the war and peace museums that were in the process of being established all over the country at that time.\nIt was precisely at this time that the construction of a new Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum got under way. There was a clash between both values in connection with final plans for displays, resulting in widespread debate on what was the “peace” sought by the people of Okinawa.\nThis paper addresses this issue from two perspectives. First, it looks back at the philosophy behind the construction of the former Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum in the 1970s and the processes that determined which displays would give form to that philosophy. In addition to ascertaining the horizons achieved by peace displays and exhibitions in Okinawa, by overlaying the fundamental concepts behind exhibitions, master plans and debate within the supervisory committee, this paper introduces a plan for displays whose aim is the creation of peace by means of communicating to the rest of the world the “spirit of Okinawa” formed against a backdrop of wartime experiences in Okinawa and experiences during the post-war period of occupation.
