Understanding how the intentions of those that put together an exhibition are conveyed and understood by visitors improves methods for conveying research findings and is important for creating exhibitions based on the perspective of visitors. Also, the ability to make a quantitative evaluation is desirable so that it can be reflected in improvements to exhibition methods.\nHistorical exhibitions differ from scientific exhibitions in that there remains considerable room for visitors to accept a diversity of meanings. Taking account of this feature, a study of methods for the quantitative evaluation of how those intentions are conveyed and understood by visitors was conducted for the exhibitions of the National Museum of Japanese History.\nWe evaluated special exhibitions using members of the Tomo no Kai (Society of Friends of the NMJH) as subjects. Using a method where subjects were asked to choose keywords relating to exhibition materials and the names of exhibition sections, as anticipated, we found a difference in the percentage of correct answers before and after gallery talks, which reflected the degree of understanding. There were few correct answers on written materials, which clearly explained in quantitative terms the phenomenon of comments saying that the exhibitions are difficult.\nFor permanent exhibitions we studied methods for their evaluation using ordinary visitors to the museum as subjects. Here, the method adopted involved formulating questions to determine whether the intentions of the exhibitions or the points that we wanted visitors to interpret had been conveyed. We found that this method allowed evaluation that had fewer unclear elements when measuring understanding compared to the method of using open responses. By employing this method it is possible to evaluate whether methods used for an exhibition are effective in conveying its intentions.\nIt was evident from the results of these evaluations that there are issues surrounding current exhibitions.
