It was believed throughout the Early Modern period that the festival dated back to 1432. This was the sole tale of origin that existed during this period. However, in 1891 a tale of origin was created that attributed the Zen monk Enji Ben'en, founder of Joutenji temple in Hakata during the Kamakura period, with having started the festival. This new tale of origin was rapidly accepted and went on to be further modified.\nThis paper first examines the 1432 tale of origin, and in so doing illustrates that it reflects a considerable amount of historical fact. Next, it suggests the following reasons for the connection between Joutenji and the Gion-Yamakasa. When, in 1674, a famine ravaged the Fukuoka domain, large quantities of gruel were given to the starving in Joutenji. To express their gratitude, the people of Hakata dedicated Yamakasas to the temple. However, by the late of the Edo period this historical fact had been forgotten. Consequently, people continued to dedicate the Yamakasas without knowing the reason. Then, in 1891, a tale was created that attributed Enji Ben'en with having invented the Yamakasa.\nThis is followed by an examination of the acceptance and changes in subsequent years to this later tale of origin. The following important points emerged in the course of this examination.\nFirstly, the newly created tale of origin for this traditional festival was better than the existing tale, leading to a restructuring of the history of the festival and the history of the groups involved.\nSecondly, on occasions aspects of “current” and “actual” festivals were projected onto the tale of origin. Such changes to the tale meant that details of the tale of origin increasingly approximated the current situation.
