There are few records of the private residences of ordinary people, and the date of construction is not known even for many of the private residences that have been designated as important cultural properties. Being able to identify the construction dates of these private residences would enhance their historical value and be useful for a wide range of research fields, including research into private residences, the history of lifestyles, and regional history. The research described here looks at the potential and efficacy of radiocarbon dating from the standpoint of research on private residences.\nIdentifying the construction dates of private residences will increase basic data on cultural properties and make the restoration sequence of private residences more verifiable. That is to say, while this field of research estimates the date of construction and researches changing styles of residences based on vestige restoration and sequencing, identifying dates on important points in this type of sequence will improve the verifiability of the sequence. Further, in connection with widearea research and collaborative research involving the study of private residences and documentary history as well as other kinds of historical research, this paper also discusses the potential of radiocarbon dating for examples of the private residence type of 3 rooms and long dirt floor.\nOne example reported in this study is the Seki family residence, designated an important cultural property, which was used in the collaborative research project titled “General Research on the Application of High-Precision Dating Techniques to Historical Materials” carried out by the National Museum of Japanese History in FY2004.
