One of the various methods of providing public access is through online exhibitions which use images of materials held in a museum's collection to create several pages based on a particular topic. Understanding the browsing characteristics of users of online exhibitions is important for identifying how to convey a topic appropriately, how to structure an online exhibition and how to determine the appropriate volume of data to be presented. It is also useful for evaluating the degree of interest in an online exhibition.\nWe examined the browsing characteristics of users by analyzing the number of visits to pages made available on Rekihaku's website that comprise online exhibitions made up of pages containing text and images, and explanations thereof. This analysis revealed two groups of browsers. The interest in the online exhibition of the visitors in one group leads them to view many pages, while the relatively early suspension of viewing by the second group suggests a low level of interest. Creating explanatory text on a page increases the percentage of visitors showing a high level of interest. However, there is a decline in the rate of movement between pages where viewers continue to view pages.\nWhen subpages are linked to a main page, the probability of viewing a subpage is low at 0.2 compared with a probability of around 0.95 for moving from one main page to another main page. This rate is constant regardless of the number and type of subpages provided. The estimated rate derived from the browsing ratio as measured by the ratio of movement between pages, which is the same as viewing main pages, is not affected by the presence or absence of subpages or their number. In terms of main pages alone, the addition of a subpage leads to a reduction in the percentage of views of the next main page.\nNormalizing the access rate for the first page showed that there was a higher level of interest in online exhibitions whose content comprised images compared with those comprising text. There was a uniform level of interest in text.\nSuch relationships provide suggestions for both online exhibitions and traditional (“brick and mortar”) on-site exhibitions.
