This introduction of cremation caused changes to the order of funeral procedures. In addition, around 1970, some households stopped asking community groups for help with funeral services and started to rent hotel rooms for such ceremonies. This shift from homes to funeral halls can be considered as a sign that funeral practices centered on community and kin groups started changing, driven by the intention of the chief mourners who did not want to bother them. Needless to say, behind this, there was also a social factor: a dramatic increase in white-collar workers and double-income families busy with working after the high economic growth period. Furthermore, after the 2000s, more and more people die in hospitals and nursing homes. In relation to the above mentioned transitions, this paper reports the Z Family in the Central District, Nagano Prefecture, and 13 families related to them by marriage as a case study to discuss changes in the form of family as well as other accompanying changes in nursing care of parents and attendance on the dying (the form of dying). As evidenced by this case study, while more and more people die in hospitals and nursing homes instead of their own homes, the venue for funerals is shifting, and the number of mourners has also begun to change.
