Recently, more and more specialists, such as medical professionals, funeral directors, and cremators, are also engaged in funeral services. In this context, this paper aims to reveal the characteristics of changes. To this end, the changes in the approach of third parties to funeral services are examined in relation to the subject of the collaborative research on “The Changes of Custom of the Funeral and Grave Systems before, during and after the Rapid Economic Growth Period.” More specifically, in order to assess the degree of involvement of third parties, attention is focused on two aspects: the “participation” of newcomers in the process as a bearer of tradition by acquiring knowledge of the manners and customs; and the “intervention” of third parties that produces impacts and causes changes to the manners and customs.\nThe word “third party” in this article means an outsider to those who were responsible for funeral customs for years. These outsiders often join the process of funeral rites by acting as a substitute for some functions. Considering their involvement that causes changes in funeral customs as “intervention,” this paper discusses its basic theme: trends in the preservation and change of funeral customs.\nFirst, this paper presents an example of “participation” and examines the trends in changes and interventions from the 1960s (or the late 1950s) to the 1990s based on “Collection of Materials on the Death, Funeral Rites, and Grave Systems” by the National Museum of Japanese History. Then, in order to clarify new changes after the 2000s, the results of our research in Unzen City, Nagasaki Prefecture, is referred to as an example that illustrates a new form of funeral procession to use a biertype hearse introduced as more and more funerals are held at funeral halls.
