As a prerequisite for the study, it is essential to verify the sequence of dankan  (fragmentary pieces of writing) based on sequential information and to restore account books and other documents as they were in the Nara period. To show how significant it is, this article takes the case of Todai-ji Shakyojo Ge (Report of the Sutra Copying Office of Todai-ji Temple) for instance. This consists of nine pieces of dankan, and they are misarranged in Dai Nihon Komonjo: Hennen Monjo, which does not stand on solid ground. By rearranging the dankan based on sequential information, it turns out to be highly likely that Todai-ji Shakyojo Ge is a document dated December 15, 747. If it is true, it may be the oldest document regarding Todai-ji Temple, which is important since it indicates a milestone when the temple became established as a leading temple of Japanese Buddhism. The research on individual sutra-copying projects is meaningful not only because it can classify Shakyojo documents, a collection of dankan, into respective sutra-copying projects. Another unique and important aspect of the study appears, for example, in the sutra-copying project of 4,000 volumes of Dharani. This project is estimated to have started around August to September, 745. If this estimation is correct, it is possible to assume that the project was created for the purpose of praying for the recovery of the Emperor Shomu. This assumption suggests that esoteric Buddhist practices had been introduced into the imperial court by that time.
