In the field of Japanese medieval history, some scholars argue that the first markets of the medieval period were held at hiroba. Bearing in mind this historical understanding of markets, I present my own views on the matter from the perspective of historical geography.\nProfessor Kobayashi Kentarō has conducted historical/geographical studies of ichiba (“market grounds”), but fails to consider the sites at which markets were conducted in the towns that consisted of ichi-yashiki and machi-yashiki in the Sengoku period. In terms of the issues addressed in the present joint research project, the question is whether or not these sites may be called hiroba.\nThe relationship between ichiba and hiroba is considered in a number of steps. First, a diagrammatic model (“The Forms and Conceptual Genealogy of Ichiba; Fig. 1) is used to examine the types of public spaces that existed from the ichiba of the early medieval period, which have already been identified in studies of Japanese medieval history as hiroba, to the Sengoku-period ichi-yashiki and machi-yashiki as discussed in the field of historical geography. This leads to a focus on the key concept of ichisha (lit.,“market house”) as it appears in historical documents from the early medieval period to the Sengoku period. This is followed by an examination of relevant pictorial records, which offer a more vivid image of the medieval market scene than can be gained from textual records. Using these materials and the above-mentioned model as a basis, I construct a further diagrammatic representation of the historical development of ichiba (Fig. 4) and develop an original theory of their relationship to hiroba.\nThe study concludes with the following thesis : As the settlements reached the stages of machiba (town) and machinami (rows of houses), markets were set up borrowing the spaces under the eaves of townspeople's houses.
