It was the optimum number from the point of view of commercial profit and safe navigation, although more people could be accommodated. In the late Southern Song period, it is possible that trading ships between Japan and China carried more people than in the Northern Song period, but there are no reliable examples to prove this. In the Yuan period, some trading ships carried more than 250 crew and passengers. Monks were given passage and went to China in groups of a dozen or tens of people. In 1342, the Tenryuji ship (天龍寺船) carried more than 60 monks to China. The number of its crew and passengers must have been at least a hundred and several dozen, or even over 200, in total. This increase in crew and passenger numbers was caused by the ending of trade control and travel restrictions by the Dazaifu (大宰府), the regional government office, which enabled Japanese monks and merchants to go to China on trading ships. Maritime merchants reduced their cargo and took them on board for the fares. From the South Song to Yuan periods, Japanese passengers were a greater presence in the maritime trade between Japan and China.
