In this context, the Ryukyu Kingdom Map held by the Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Art Museum is a rare, precious source of information on maritime travel between Satsuma and Ryukyu in the mid-15th century. However, due to the lack of supporting evidence, it is difficult to verify the information contained in the Map through comparison with contemporary sources. Therefore, this study compares the Map with early modern records of voyages, especially the diary of his voyage to Ryukyu (1638-1639) by Ito Sukemasa, a Satsuma clansman, to perform a retrospective analysis of how the routes on the Map were used.\nThis analysis indicates that the three routes illustrated on the Ryukyu Kingdom Map are likely to have been used selectively depending on the direction of travel and the time of year. In particular, the direction of travel when crossing the Shichito-nada in the Black Current was the most important point to consider in choosing a route. This study also reveals that only ships traveling from Satsuma to Ryukyu were required to stop at Kuchinoerabu-jima Island and wait for favorable winds in order to sail the northflowing Black Current.
