These days, however, public opinion in favor of the preservation of the natural environment is growing, and the effects of fungicides and insecticides on the environment has become an important problem. This being the case, and especially in view of growing concern about the destruction of the ozone layer, the authors reviewed insect and fungus control methods in museums, and carried out a basic investigation in order to find out what possibilities there are for the future. Commonly used chemicals, in particular, fumigants (such as ethylene oxide, methyl bromide, and sulfuryl fluoride) were studied for their effects on the ozone layer, as well as their effect on materials and the human body, and it was found that all of them involved some problem. It is not likely that an alternative method or chemical to the existing fumigants will be soon discovered. However, possibilities for the future are beginning to appear ; for example, the development of insecticidal and fungicidal methods using inert atmosphere fumigation, and the development of pyrethroid-type insecticides.
