This stance should be still respected today. However, there are surely all kinds of possibilities as to how history should be recognized from such regional variation. Most conventional concepts have regarded the Japanese Archipelago as a homogeneous society, considered regional variation to be due to a time lag, supposed a change from one to the other, and described the process of change as occurring in a number of stages. However, it has long been doubted that Japanese history can be conceived as uniform throughout the whole Japanese Archipelago. In particular, it is not meaningless to give some doubt to the presumption that the history of people's life and culture forms a uniform history throughout the whole Japanese Archipelago. We need to consider the possibility of recognizing other histories in the regional variations.\nIn this paper, the author takes up and examines the differences in annual rites in the central area between eastern and western Japan. He makes clear the fact that annual rites in general are held in the family unit in the Kantō District, and in the village unit in the Kinki District. At the same time, the author compares and examines the rites of Bon and Shōgatsu (New Year), which are most strongly considered to be family events. Results show clearly that the units of family and village are carried through even in these rites.\nThe differences of family and village as shown in annual rites are a concentrated expression of the historical differences produced by each society.
