However, when children who were sunk in the village society which was based on illiterate culture, started to learn the literate culture, it was not the case that every action affirmed this tendency; strong reactions took place. In other words, the literate culture took root in village societies by overcoming the strong resistance of the illiterate culture. Few historical documents remains to tell us of such educational and cultural changes. “I-ro-ha Iken”, or A Different View on (old) Japanese alphabet, and “Sewaji Ōrai”, or Text of Ordinary Characters, described in my paper are examples of such rare bibliography, written at the end of the Tokugawa regime (the Edo Period) by a literary farmer and a teacher of penmanship, who considered it their mission to teach the literate culture to the children in the village society. These documents reflect vividly the life of children in village society, as seen by the penmanship teachers.\nThey did not promote the teaching of the literate culture on a full-scale affirmation of the literate culture, but they were fully aware that community education to change homo sapiens into men was necessary and indispensable. They also criticized the favoritism shown by parents toward their children that was apparent in those days, and demanded a strict response by the village community with regard to the growth of the children.
