In particular, there appeared at the beginning of the 20th century many synthetic organic pigments having a good fastness property comparable to that of the inorganic pigments. However, these synthetic organic pigments were hardly used in artists' colors until the middle of this century. Their demand and use gradually increased along with the development of new types of coloring materials which used synthetic resins as vehicle.\nAt the present time, there are at least 70 kinds of synthetic organic pigments used in artists' colors. Comparing the Munsell values of acrylic colors produced by a Japanese manufacturer with those produced by an U. S. manufacturer, we can point out a wider variety of colors and a higher brightness as characteristics of modern colors: the difference in the color choice was most marked in red colors.
