How many colors and what kinds of pigments did they use? How did they combine such colors and pigments? How great are the differences in colors and pigments between the kinds of architecture or the periods when they were built? How are the colors arranged among the neighboring buildings on the same site? I will survey the above issues by tracing their development, mainly through picture materials in ancient times (generally, Nara and Heian period, but sometimes including Yamato Court period) and in the middle ages (Kamakura, Muromachi and Azuchi-Momoyama periods) and through remaining buildings in the modern ages (Edo period).
