In medieval Matsuchi there was a shuku, or dwelling quarters for hijiri (low-ranking Buddhist priests), but this place had no geographical continuity to the barrier-station settlement later set up by the Wakayama domain in the early-modern period, because the highway that passed by the shuku was different from the one running through the barrier station (sekisho). However, the early-modern danka system (requiring people to belong to a Buddhist temple) forced the Matsuchi residents to become parishioners of a local temple of the Shinshū sect. As a result, the Suda rural community made Matsuchi a special village assigned to provide theatrical performances at religious rituals. Earlier the performances had been conducted by turns by lay low-ranking officials, but in the early-modern period they became an obligation of the people of Matsuchi. In this way, discrimination against Matsuchi emerged at that time. Techniques of making ointments and plasters were transmitted by the medieval hijiri priests to the people of Matsuchi, and these medical products became a local specialty, which were widely sold by itinerant tinkers as the forests in the Kii Peninsula were opened up to farming.
