It has been thought that forest worship was the primitive form of Shintō ritual, representing the way rites were performed prior to building of shrine structures, as well as a vestige of the concept of divinity prior to the enshrinement of deities. Under the influence of folklorist Yanagita Kunio, forest worship has been viewed as rituals performed for the ancestral spirits.\nIn the Kinokawa river basin―the area covered by our joint research project―and in the Hidaka river basin, both in Wakayama Prefecture, small shrines remain dedicated to what are called sato-gami (“village gods”), using woodlands as the site of rituals.
