| 内容記述 | 日本古代の喪葬儀礼は七世紀から八世紀にかけて大きく変化した。そして喪葬儀礼に供奉する役割も、持統大葬以降は四等官制に基づく装束司・山作司などの葬司が臨時に任命されるようになった。葬司の任命に関しては、特定の氏族に任命が集中する傾向があり、諸王・藤原朝臣・石川朝臣・大伴宿祢・石上朝臣・紀朝臣・多治比真人・佐伯宿祢・阿倍朝臣が葬司に頻繁に任命されていた。 これらの氏族が何故頻繁に葬司に任命されていたか、その理由を検討すると、諸王や真人姓などの皇親氏族の場合、天皇の親族であることが任命される理由であり、藤原氏も当初は葬司への任命はあまりなかったものの、天皇外戚になったことから重用されるようになったと考えられる。 その他の氏族は、もともと食膳奉仕や宮城守衛などの職掌を担っていた氏族であり、さらに天皇の殯宮にても同様に食膳奉仕や殯宮守衛を行っていたことが、葬司任命につながったものと思われる。つまり葬司は喪葬儀礼の変化の中で新たに設けられたものであったものの、その任命に当たっては実際には以前からの喪葬儀礼の影響を強く受けたものであった。 なお喪葬儀礼専掌氏族として有名な土師氏は、葬司にはほとんど任命されていなかったが、実際には六世紀後半以降、天皇の殯を管掌する役割を担っており、八世紀を通じて遺体に食膳を献上するなどの奉仕を行っていた。 |

| 内容記述 | Funeral rites in ancient Japan underwent substantial change from the 7th through 8th centuries. The roles of those who officiated at funerals also changed, as after the funeral of Emperor Jito official positions based on the shitokan system were temporarily established, such as one for overseeing the funeral adornments and one for looking after the mausoleum. Officials appointed to these positions came from specific clans, with imperial princes, members of the Fujiwara clan, Ishikawa no Ason, Otomo no Sukune, Isonokami no Ason, Ki no Ason, Tajihi no Mahito, Saeki Sukune and Abe no Ason frequently appointed to these positions. So why were these clans frequently appointed to serve as funeral officials? Those related to the imperial family such as imperial princes and clans with high-ranking names under the “kabane” (e.g. Mahito) system were appointed because of their relationship with the imperial family. Although in the beginning members of the Fujiwara clan were hardly ever appointed to officiate at funerals, this became important when they came to be related to the imperial family through marriage. Members of other clans originally served as officials who made food offerings to the deceased and who protected the palace, and had also assumed these roles for temporary imperial mortuary halls. It is believed that their participation in these roles led to their appointment as funeral officials. In other words, even though new posts for funeral officials were established amid the changes that were taking place to funeral rites, earlier funeral rites had a strong influence on official appointments. Members of the Haji clan, which was well known for officiating at funerals, were mostly not appointed as funeral officials. In fact, from the middle of the 6th century onwards they assumed the role of managing the imperial mortuary halls and throughout the 8th century the services they provided included making food offerings to the deceased. |
