| 内容記述 | 現代の葬送儀礼は，告別式の成立と葬儀産業の成長が基底にあって構築されている。告別式は人口の流動性の高い都市に合致した葬儀形態であり，葬儀産業は，流動化によって弱体化した地域コミュニティーを補完することで成長していった。これらの変容は，近世以来継続した葬儀の中心的儀礼である葬列が肥大化した結果，近代化の中で流動化する都市住民の葬儀としては適合しなくなることで次第に廃され，告別式に代替していったことは，近代の葬制研究のなかで明らかにされている。よって当時の葬列の肥大化の解明は，その後の葬儀の変容を考える上で重要な要素であり，より詳細な検討が必要とされる。 しかし，葬列の展開に関する研究は基本的に文献に基づくものが多く，スペクタクル化として外部からの視線に関する言説の考察が中心であり，その視線の対象となる葬列の具体的な形態やその肥大状況についてはいまだ十分に解明されたわけではない。そのため，その後の衰退への過程や告別式における儀礼要素の流用の状況も明らかになっているわけではない。 本館所蔵の『明譽眞月大姉葬儀写真帖』は，明治末期の葬儀過程を写真帖にしたものであるが，自宅から葬列をして寺院までの写真記録は希有であり，極めて貴重な資料である。この資料によると，当時の葬列の具体的な形象が明らかになるだけでなく，葬列の肥大状況を見て取ることで，その後の告別式において見せる葬儀としての祭壇の成立を促す様も把握できる。さらに供花としての蓮華や生花などの多様な形態の供物が祭壇脇に安置されつつも，スペクタクル化を担う葬具は大きく転換しつつ，現代の葬儀を形作るようになっていったことがわかる。 |

| 内容記述 | Today's funeral rites have been basically molded by two factors: (1) the newly established custom of holding the final-farewell ceremony and (2) the development of the funeral industry. The final-farewell ceremony has become the most suitable way to grieve for the deceased in urban areas characterized by frequent population movements. In the meantime, the funeral industry is developing as a complementary alternative to the communities that have been undermined by frequent population movements. As revealed by recent studies on funeral rites, the final-farewell ceremony has gradually overtaken the role of the funeral procession, which had constituted the main funeral ritual since the early modern period but overgrown to the point where it was no longer suitable for urban residents who had embraced a fluid way of living in the process of modernization. Therefore, the process of how the funeral procession was overgrowing at that time is an important issue that needs to be analyzed in more details to uncover the changes of funeral customs after that period. Most studies of funeral processions, however, took a document-based approach and an external point of view to analyze how the funeral procession had become spectacle without fully examining the subject itself to reveal what actually went on in funeral processions or how the ritual had overgrown. Therefore, the following process of its decline and the ritual elements taken over into the final-farewell ceremony have not been revealed. Photo Album of the Funeral of Teru Araki held by the National Museum of Japanese History is a booklet of photos of a funeral process in the late Meiji Period. This is a very valuable material since there are not many photographic records of a funeral procession from the home to the temple in that era. The photo album not only reveals the actual form of funeral procession at that time but also shows some evidence of overgrowing of the ritual, which later led to the custom of setting up a funeral altar as a display at a memorial service, as well as the continued provision of many kinds of offerings, including lotus and other flowers, to decorate the alter and the drastic transformation of other funeral accessories to make the ritual more spectacle. Thus today's style of funeral rites has taken form. |
