内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Among the textbooks on the sericulture, this paper discusses the evaluations made in France in the latter half of the 19th century on 『養蚕教弘録』 “Yousan-kyoukouroku : Étude complète de l'éducation des vers à soie” , a textbook that described the silkworm rearing know-how of the highest level at the time in Japan and was written by a farmer, 清水金左衛門 SHIMIDZEU Kinzaimon, whose profession was to raise silkworms in the mid-19th century.
In Japan, about 100 textbooks on the silkworm rearing know-hows were written during the period from the beginning of the 18th century to the little after the mid-19th century. Especially, during the period from the end of the 18th century to the little after the mid-19th century, the technological innovation on the sericulture was mainly made by the farmers who actually raised the silkworms. So, many of the textbooks on the silkworm rearing know-hows were also written by the farmers, the actual producers. “Yousan-kyoukouroku: Étude comlète de l'éducation des vers à soie” was born in the current of the times.
A French doctor, Pierre Joseph MOURIER obtained this textbook in Yokohama in 1867, translated it into French, and sent it to France. In 1868, this textbook was published in “le Bulletin de la société impériale zoologique d'Acclimatation”. Although in France at that time, a great concern was given to the silkworm eggs and sericulture, this book was almost neglected as an object of the scientific study, contrary to MOURIER's expectation. The reason was that the contents of this textbook selected based on the MOURIER's views on the sericulture and his opinion were not in accord with the inclinations of the academic sericultural circles and the industry in France. The major concern of the French academic sericultural circles was given to the experiments on the rearing of the wild silkworms. And the policy of the industry in France was to make up the drop of the amount of cocoon crops caused by the silkworm diseases by introducing the mass rearing of the Japanese race which had resistance to the silkworm diseases. This method of rearing silkworms was inevitably a coarse sericulture resulted from the dense rearing and mass rearing.
The basic attitude for the silkworm rearing of SHIMIDZEU Kinzaimon, the author of this textbook, was to attach importance to the ventilation and control of humidity in the rearing room and to propose the sparse rearing on the rearing beds. This method of rearing was in accord with the method re-adopted by the sericultural industry in Europe from the latter half of 1870s onward after they successfully dealt with the silkworm diseases. This fact shows that the proposal itself of MOURIER to improve the disastrous state of the French sericulture was correct. In Italy in 1870s, C. B. PICHATS introduced the standard space of the rearing bed at each age proposed by SHIMIDZEU Kinzaimon in “Allevamento del Baco da Seta” as an case example being adopted in Japan. This shows that C. B. PICHATS evaluated the rearing method of SHIMIDZEU Kinzaimon as quoteworthy.
As discussed above, the intention of MOURIER who introduced “Yousan-kyoukouroku: Étude complète de l'éducation des Vers à soie” to Europe was to use the Japanese method of silkworm rearing that was rated high in France at that time, as the basis of the argument to return the French method of silkworm rearing to the conventional one. His intention and the method of silkworm rearing proposed by SHIMIDZEU Kinzaimon were not accepted by the French sericultural industry for many special reasons in those days.
The method of silkworm rearing proposed by SHIMIDZEU Kinzaimon deserved attention as an orthodox method in the sericultural history. However, it can be said that in the scientific research level of the sericultural academic circles in Europe, it was not worthy to be considered as a theory. Even though the opinions in consequence may be the same, there seems to be a wide gap in the processes of considerations until they reached their opinions, between the sericultural farmers in Japan in the early 19th century and the French sericultural academic circles in the late 19th century.
