| 内容記述 | 広場は都市特有の装置であろうか。広場論は基本的に都市を対象に行われてきた。都市の市民の存在が広場を必要とし、広場を作りだしてきたとする。しかし、都市形成の前提としての農村の存在を無視することはできない。都市が農村から完全に断絶して形成されたのではない。本稿は、日本の村落社会における広場の存在形態を考察することで、都市の広場の前提を明らかにしようとするものである。 広場という言葉は近世からのものであるが、日常的に使用されるようになったのは古いことではない。広場に相当する民俗語彙としてはニワとツジがあるが、後者の方がより人々の集合空間としての意味が強い。そのツジが東日本よりも西日本において頻繁に使用される傾向があることが注目される。そして、それに対応するかのように、村落景観や村落内部秩序において東西の相違は大きく、それらと密接に関連しているのが人々の集合空間である。東の村落では家々の存在が強調され、会合も個別の家が会場になることが多く、西では人々が集合する施設が設けられてきた。野天における集会のための空地も西において発達している。それは集落の物理的なあり方によっても大きく規定されている。東の集落は屋敷と屋敷の間に田畑があり、そこが臨時的に集合空間となったが、西の集落は家々が壁を連ね、軒を接しているので、人々の集合空間を集落内に計画的に設定する必要があったのである。 |

| 内容記述 | Is the hiroba (public square or space) a feature only of the urban environment? Studies of hiroba generally focus on cities and point to the particular need the urban population has for them. In considering such public spaces, however, we cannot overlook the rural village, the precursor and historical prerequisite of the city. The city did not evolve totally separately from the village. Through an examination of the hiroba in Japan's early modern village communities, this study seeks to clarify the premises for urban public space in Japan. The term hiroba has been around since early modern times, but did not come into common usage until much later. Niwa and tsuji were comparable vernacular words widely used, the latter more so in the sense of a gathering place. It should also be noted that tsuji was more commonly used in western than in eastern Japan. This may be related to the great difference between east and west in the rural landscape and internal order, closely linked to which was the space where people gathered. In eastern Japan, where private houses were rather dominant in the village, communal gathering often took place in someone's house. In the villages of western Japan, however, a building was usually erected expressly for public meetings, and even spaces for outdoor gatherings were created. Differences in the physical layout of the village communities in the respective regions were also a determining factor in the formation of the hiroba : whereas in eastern villages the houses were separated by fields which were used as temporary gathering places, houses in western villages were built close together, making it necessary to build special public spaces within the village. |
