| 内容記述 | 斉明紀に見える「渡嶋」が具体的にどの地域を指すのかという問題の解明は、日本古代国家における一大転機であった大化改新後の初期律令国家の形成過程や、当時の国際関係を考える上できわめて重要な問題であって、早く江戸時代から学者の注目を集めてきた。 古くは津軽の北は北海道であるという単純な理解から、渡嶋＝北海道説が流布していたが、その後、津田左右吉等によって『日本書紀』のいわゆる「比羅夫北征記事」の厳密な読解が試みられるようになり、史料の解釈から渡嶋を本州北部の内におさめる見解が有力となっていき、戦後の通説的位置を永く占めてきた。 しかし近年の北海道考古学の急速な進展にともなって本州と北海道との間の豊かな交流が明らかになるにつれて、比羅夫は当然北海道へ渡ったであろうという共通認識が形成され、津軽の北は当然北海道であるという渡嶋＝北海道説が復活し、現在ではこれが通説となったと言ってよい。 しかし中世以前における「津軽」は、現在の津軽地方の南部のみを指す語であり、半島海岸部はむしろ道南地域と密接な関わりを持つ世界であった。またそうした津軽海峡を挟む世界は、道央部あるいは道東・道北部とはやはり違った世界である。こうしたことを考えるとき、津軽の北に位置するという渡嶋はこの海峡を挟む世界に相当するのではないかと思われる。 そのさらに北には「粛慎」の世界が存在したのであるが、それこそ道央部や道東・道北部といった、本州側からはよりいっそう未知の世界であったのではないか。「粛慎」の風俗習慣などについての多様な史料の在り方は、「粛慎」自体のもつ複合的な民族要素によっているものと思われる。 この津軽海峡を挟む世界は、一〇世紀頃にいったん消滅し、それが渡嶋という用語の消滅の背景となるが、まもなく復活し、中世においては、津軽海峡を「内海」とする、海峡の南北一体の世界がまた形成されていったと考えられる。 |

| 内容記述 | The region called “Watarinoshima” appears in the section of Saimei of the Nihonshoki. Many historians have debated on the precise location of Watarinoshima, as it is the crucial region for the formation of the centralized state and its international relation at that time. Traditionally, Watarinoshima had been identified as Hokkaido. But it was later considered to be the part of the mainland according to the analysis of “Mission of Hirafu” in the Nihonshoki by an influential historian, TSUDA Soukichi. Recent archaeological researches reveal that Hokkaido and the Japanese mainland had more active interaction than previously thought. Thus, the traditional theory that Hirafu might have been to Hokkaido seems plausible. The current prevailing view identifies Watarinoshima as Hokkaido. Before the Medieval era, the northernmost part of the mainland had more close relationship with Hokkaido than the other parts of the mainland. The regions surrounding the Tsugaru Straits, which are the northern most mainland and the southern part of Hokkaido, formed a cultural sphere and it was different from the cultures in eastern or central Hokkaido. Thus, Watarinoshima might have been the area surrounding the Tsugaru Straits. North to Watarinoshima, there was an area called Mishihase. It can be identified as eastern or central Hokkaido. Various chronicles are available for the folklore of Mishihase people, indicating that they had a complex and various cultural interaction with other groups. The cultural area surrounding the Tsugaru Straits disintegrated in the tenth century and consequently the word of Watarinoshima disappeared in historical texts. After a couple of centuries, the cultural interaction between the northernmost mainland and the southern Hokkaido revived and Watarinoshima again flourished. |
